FAQ

  1. What are Comunn Eachdraidh Nis’ (CEN) opening times? The archive and shop are open Monday to Friday 10am until 4pm and the cafe is open 11am until 4pm. Tea/coffee and home baking is served all day and hot food is served from midday until 2.30pm. Please remember that during 2018, our museum will be undergoing renovations and will not be open to the public.
  2. Where is Comunn Eachdraidh Nis? Please see our Contact and Directions tab on the home page for directions on where we are. .
  3. Do I have to book a table in the cafe? At peak times (i.e Easter holidays, summer holidays) it is advisable to book a table in advance. Our cafe gets extremely busy during these times and sometimes capacity is limited. All coach parties and larger parties must book in advance and inform us of any dietary requirements and numbers.   4. Is there anything for children to do? We provide colouring books, pencils and toy blocks in our cafe to keep little ones entertained. We also have lots of nice items in our shop for those who are good at saving their pocket money!
  5. Is there a fee to use the archive? Our archive is free to use but being a charity, we welcome donations.
  6. Is your archive accessible online? A selection of croft history records are available through Hebridean Connections but we have not put our archive online.
  7. Can I park at Comunn Eachdraidh Nis? Yes, there is parking at the back of the building. During our renovations there will be no parking at the front of the building or in the carpark to the side of the building.
  8. Is there coach parking? Yes, there is coach parking.
  9. Is there disabled access to the building? Yes and we also have disabled toilet facilities.
  10. Does Comunn Eachdraidh Nis allow dogs? No dogs except guide dogs are allowed in our building.
  11. What other local amenities are nearby? There are 3 Post Offices in the Ness area (Cross, Skigersta and Port of Ness). There are two local shops – one in Swainbost (fuel available) and another a quarter of a mile from CEN Cross Stores. There is also a charity shop (Carthannas Nis) and a laundrette. Please check opening times before visiting. The local sports centre Spors Nis is 3 miles from us on the A859. There is a swimming pool, gym and bowling alley amongst other facilities. The fantastic GAIN Eoropie Dunes swing park is along from Spors Nis in the village of Eoropie. For more information on the swing park, follow this link.                                                                                                                                                                              Galson Motors buses operate 2 hourly to and from Stornoway. Please see our Contact and Directions tab on our home page for bus timetables. There is a bus stop opposite to the CEN building.
  12. Do you have toilets and/or baby changing facilities? We have toilets and baby changing facilities.
  13. How much is membership to CEN and how do I register to become a member? Membership is £10.00 per annum. Contact office@cenonline.org for a membership form or collect one from us.
  14. Does CEN have wifi? Yes, we have free wifi in the archive room.
  15. How much do the bricks for your ‘Buy a Brick’ fundraiser cost? Bricks are £50.00 each. See our ‘Buy a Brick’ fundraiser tab on our home page for more details.
